An area of bogland, forest and lakes it is
dominated by the quartzite peaks of the Twelve Bens. Connemara
green marble quarries are to be found on the lower slopes of the
mountains.
The sixteenth century Ballynahinch Castle
proudly overlooks the Ballynahinch river. This has been the house
of the O'Flaherty Chieftains, Grace O'Malley, Humanity Dick Martin
and the Maharajah Ranjitsinji. Richard Martin was called "Humanity
Dick" because of his great compassion for animals which led
to the setting up by him of the R.S.P.C.A.
The island castle (a crannog) was built in the fifteenth century
by Donal O'Flaherty, husband of Grace O'Malley or Granuaile as
she was also known. The ruins of the castle are stiIl to be seen
today from the Galway-Clifden road. A forestry plantation located
near Recess was funded by the lrish American Cultural Foundation
in appreciation of the Irish emigrants contribution to Boston
and the U.S. Midway along the Inagh Valley on the western shores
of Derryclare Lough there is a nature reserve of old natural Oak
woodland.
